A limited release of Johnnie Walker's most premium brand. The Ghost and Rare blends will focus on Scotland's lost and sorely missed distilleries, with this first release built around malt from the legendary Brora. Other "Ghosts" rearing their welcome heads from the annals of whisky history is malt from lost Speyside distillery Pittyvaich, and Cambus grain, which closed in 2002 and 1993 respectively. Given that Brora shut it's doors in 1983, were talking about whisky that was distilled at least 34 years ago! Speaking of the Ghost and Rare series, master blender Jim Beveridge had the following to say: “Whiskies from these ghost distilleries are becoming increasingly rare. JOHN WALKER & SONS PRIVATE COLLECTION 2017 EDITION 70CL
Here's the 2017 edition from the John Walker & Sons Private Collection, titled Mastery of Oak. For this release, the team at Johnnie Walker have using a combination of three vattings - the first is a blend of malt and grain whiskies aged mostly in first-fill American oak, the second is a blend of Highland and Speyside single malts from refill casks, and the third is a blend of whiskies from a range of experimental casks (which features different char profiles, housed different drinks beforehand and some had even been "salt cured"!).
John Walker & Sons Private Collection 2016 Edition
The most complex edition to date, 2016 is third bottling in the John Walker & Sons Private Collection series, continuing the themes of the incredibly limited Directors' Collection and offering these small batch editions of Johnnie Walker to a wider audience. This edition, titled 'Fine Honeyed Notes', focuses on the sweeter flavours within the Johnnie Walker range, with some of the 100 casks coming from four closed grain distilleries – Caledonian, Cambus, Carsebridge and Port Dundas.
